Bath time is often a fun and relaxing part of a baby or toddler’s bedtime routine. However, it’s crucial for parents to be extra cautious during this time to ensure their child’s safety. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1–4 years old, with two-thirds of all infant drownings occurring in bathtubs.

These statistics are alarming, but there are numerous measures that parents can take to guarantee that their child’s bath time is secure, comfortable, and enjoyable, complete with plenty of playful splashes and laughter.

Sponge Baths for Baby

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should give newborns sponge baths for two to three weeks after birth, until the umbilical cord stump falls off and the bellybutton is fully healed. This helps prevent infection as the bellybutton heals.

Time to Move to the Baby Tub

When your baby can sit independently and has good body control, they are ready for the big tub. The baby tub is usually used for kids up to six or eight months, but every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Test the water temperature with the back of your wrist before placing your baby in the tub, aiming for water that’s 100°F.

The Number One Safety Rule

Never leave your child alone in the bathtub, not even for a second. Babies and young children can drown in just two inches of water. Avoid all distractions and take your child with you if you must leave the bathroom.

Additional Safety Measures

Never keep electrical appliances near the bathtub. Appliances, such as hair dryers, can inadvertently fall into the bath water. Keep bathroom appliances unplugged.

Always drain the tub right after your child’s bath.
